Biography

Studied at Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial in Rio de Janeiro (1964 - 1965). From 1970 to 1978, she lived in Milan, Italy, where she worked as a designer with Olivetti’s corporate image studio. Since 1973 she has been producing and showing her artistic work. Between solo exhibitions stand out: 9th Paris Biennial (1975); the 15th International Biennial of São Paulo (1981); the itinerant “Cartographies” exhibition (1993), Bronx Museum (New York), National Gallery (Ottawa, Canada) and Winnepeg (Canada); Bogotá; Caracas and Madrid; “Bienal Brasil Século XX” (São Paulo, 1994); the solo exhibition “O corpo da escultura: a obra de Iole de Freitas”, curated by Paulo Venancio Filho at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo and at Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro); project of permanent installations at Museu do Açude, in Rio de Janeiro (1999); solo exhibition at Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica (Rio de Janeiro, 2000), “Iole de Freitas” at Museu do Vale (Vila Velha, 2004), and “Iole de Freitas” at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro), all curated by Sônia Salzstein; 5ª Bienal do Mercosul (Porto Alegre, 2005). In 2007, Iole was invited to perform a site-specific project for Documenta 12 (Kassel, Germany), and in 2008 she presented her work at Fundação Iberê Camargo (Porto Alegre). In 2009 she exhibited at the Casa França-Brasil (Rio de Janeiro) and at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, and participated in the exhibition “Desire of Form” in the Akademie der Kunst in Berlin. In 2015 Iole occupied the Espaço Monumental at MAM Rio de Janeiro with the exhibition “O peso de cada um”. In 2016, he participates in the exhibition " Os Muitos e o UM: Arte Contemporânea Brasileira, Collection Andrea and José Olímpio Pereira. In 2017 participates in the exhibition "Modes de ver o Brasil: Itaú Cultural 30 anos", Oca, Parque Ibirapuera (São Paulo). Her journey is documented in numerous publications and texts by renowned art critics. She is represented by Galeria Raquel Arnaud since 1988.
