Studied at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro under Ivan Serpa. His first major solo exhibition was at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, in 1973. Waltercio Caldas is one of the most internationally recognized Brazilian artists, having shown in various countries, including Kanaal Art Foundation (Kortrijk, Belgium, 1992); Stedelijk Museum (Schiedam, Holland, 1992); Documenta 9 (Kassel, Germany, 1992); and Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva, Switzerland, 1993). He took part in several editions of the São Paulo Biennial in 1983, 1987 and 1996, and represented Brazil at the 1997 Venice Biennial. In 2008 the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, in Portugal, and the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, in Spain, presented two important solo exibitions of his work. In 2010, “Salas e Abismos”, a solo exhibition with installations, was considered one of the best exhibitions of the year in Brazil.

His work can be found in the world’s leading museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Neue Galerie (Kassel), and in Brazilian museums such as Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo and Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro. His sculptures for public spaces may be seen in Leirfjord (Norway), Paseo de las Américas, Punta del Este (Uruguay) and Avenida Beira Mar, in Rio de Janeiro. Several books have examined his work, including Aparelhos, with an essay by Ronaldo Brito (1979), Waltercio Caldas, with text by Paulo Sergio Duarte (2001), and Salas e Abismos, with texts by Paulo Sergio Duarte, Paulo Venancio Filho and Sônia Salzstein (2010). Waltercio is the author of “Manual da Ciência Popular” (1982, republished in 2008), “Velásquez” (1996), and “Notas, (    ) etc” (2006), among others. He held the solo exhibition “The nearest air and other materials”, first at Fundação Iberê Camargo (Porto Alegre, Brazil), in 2012, then at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil) and at The Blanton Museum of Art (Texas, USA), in 2013. Galeria Raquel Arnaud has represented Waltercio Caldas since 1982, and presented “A Série Negra”, in 2011, and “Fiction In Things”, in 2015. His work has been included in group exhibitions at Hanbrich Kunsthalle in Cologne, El Museo del Barrio in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
